Let us know! We are planning our next community effort project!

Grasses along the roadways are looking a bit too healthy! Remember that grass fires will burn approximately 3 times the height of the grass. Keep grasses trimmed low to lessen the danger of grass fires.

FIREWISE TAX DEDUCTION INFORMATION
As you may remember, last fall the Elk Falls Ranch Firewise Committee of the POA filed a successful application to have Elk Falls Ranch designated a Firewise Community. One of the benefits of this designation is that Elk Falls’ residents are eligible to take certain income tax deductions on their Colorado State Income Tax form for the cost of fire mitigation work performed on their property in Elk Falls Ranch. Cost for the purpose of this deduction means out-of-pocket money spent not the value of in kind labor. This benefit is currently in effect for tax years 2009 through 2013. In summary, residents may subtract from their 2010 federal taxable income (for state income tax purposes), 50% of all monies spent on fire mitigation work on their property up to a maximum of $2500. (Colorado Statute 39-22-104(4)) Since Elk Falls Firewise is not currently a 501(c)(3) organization, the committee has decided that mailing year-end statements regarding work performed on various properties would not be beneficial. For the same reason, there are no federal income tax benefits available at this time. FIREWISE DESIGNATION RENEWAL
The Firewise Committee would also like to remind all residents that our classification as a Firewise Community must be renewed each year to retain that classification. In order to meet the necessary qualifications for renewal, we must document, each year, a certain amount of labor and/or money spent for fire mitigation work in our community. Unlike the above tax deduction, all fire mitigation activities, whether labor or money spent , count for designation renewal purposes. Therefore, please continue to report all money spent and time expended for fire mitigation work on your or any of your neighbors’ properties. This could be time and money spent hauling slash, creating defensible space or any other such activity. You can e-mail this information to Mike Hensick by clicking on the 'Contact Us' link to the left.
